Tauranga City Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council have designed a program to engage schools into action. The councils work in partnership with Bay Conservation Alliance to enhance the education outcomes of the clean-up activities. Discovery Through Nature is contracted by Bay Conservation Alliance to coordinate this program and run the clean up program.

The clean-up days provide a great opportunity for schools to actively give back to their local community and for students to learn about estuary, stream and dune monitoring, how to aid injured wildlife, pollution impacts, sustainability and reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

In 2019, over 860 students and volunteers from 10 schools helped clear 1.5 tonnes of recycling and landfill waste at events in Tauranga City, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa, and Western Bay Regions of Maketu and Omokoroa. There are key areas close to Tauranga Harbour and its catchment that are cleaned by school children.
